A couple of weeks ago, I took my kids to Newcastle, County Down for a hike in the Mournes.
It's a beautiful area and the views are enjoyable once you break through the tree line about a mile up the mountainside.
Below shows the heather which covers large areas on this part of the more gentle slopes and you can see an old stone structure called the Ice House. It dates from the 1840's and used by the wealthy family of this area, when ice would have been collected in winter and stored here for use during the year.
The skies were starting to change...
...and within a few minutes the rainclouds rolled over making for slippery conditions.
But all in all it was well worth it to hike up here and I'm thankful for the health and strength to do it and that such natural beauty is practically on my doorstep!
