Scrabo Tower

Scrabo Tower sits proudly on a rocky hill overlooking Strangford Lough and the town of Newtownards.  It was completed in 1857 in memory of the 3rd Marquis of Londonderry and designed by Charles Lanyon, the same architect of Queen's University Belfast.

The tower ended up being smaller than originally planned due to spiralling building costs.

Below is the view towards Belfast, in the middle of the photo, and a golf course is directly below the tower.

This is the wonderful view over Strangford and Newtownards, the airstrip just visible.

  5. What an edifice to be remembered by! He was well-named as Charles Vane - should perhaps have been "vain". I also found this wonderful snippet on Wikipedia "He was made Ambassador to Vienna, a post he held for nine years, and was at the Congress of Vienna with his half brother Lord Castlereagh as one of the British plenipotentiaries, where, according to the renowned historian Adam Zamoyski in his book Rites of Peace: The Fall of Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna, he made a spectacle of himself with his loutish behaviour, being apparently rather often inebriated, frequenting prostitutes quite openly and once even starting a fist fight in the middle of the street with a Viennese coach driver after he punched the coachman's horse."
